Serenity

Saw Serenity with Sammy C and Smithy yesterday. Still not sure what to make of this sci-fi/adventure. Very reminiscent of Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica. It's a smart one, but as the great Colin Wiseby would say, not quite right. See frogmouth's review here. My temporary rating is 3 1/2 stars.

Sub question - Director is Joss Wheadon of Buffy and Angel fame. Does his portrayal of strong, kick ass, sexy women empower or exploit (or both)?

i actually think that you miss some of the context by only viewing the movie and not seeing any of the original "firefly" series.

serenity is a stand alone, but a lot of the context is lost without the series...

i loved serenity, but then again i also have watched firefly twice all the way through.

care to give me a thumb nail sketch on the missing context? I thought there might have been something missing.

missing context...

ummm, there is about 14 episodes of Firefly out on dvd, they only produced one series prior to it being canned (why im not sure, the series was great)

apparently in previews for firefly fans people were leaving in tears and loudly sobbing in the cinema at the deaths of Wash and Shepherd Book in the movie.

the series is an interesting look at a world where the prostitutes are the "respectable" people in society, the rebels are the good guys and where even the good guys are kinda bad...

most of the way through the series River is the quiet, childlike one in the ship and occasionally you see the effects of her reprogramming, but it's not something that appears a lot, and while the Alliance's interest in her is always there it's just one of many subplots in the series, just that as a movie it made for good storytelling.

the tragic hero in the story, Mal is always being stretched and twisted as Joss explores the man's ethics and honest heart that seems to cause more trouble than it solves, but what it does do is create an odd community with an odd mix of people from all over the place with their own secrets.

i'd suggest you watch it if you can find a copy, i bought the dvd series for $24 from JB.
